Today, I’m pleased to feature an exclusive guest post from one of my former undergraduate students, Haley Morris—a recent graduate from William Jessup University (WJU) in Rocklin, CA who says that taking my World Religions course was one of the best things she ever did. See how Haley got more grounded in her faith and more confident as an ambassador of Christ.
One of the Greatest Things I’ve Ever Done
Taking World Religions with Professor Del Rosario was one of the greatest things I’ve ever done. I learned so much about different religions and how to communicate with them as a Christian. I learned about the beliefs and practices of religions I’d heard of and even those I’d never even heard about before.
It’s important for Christian college students to be knowledgeable about World Religions. In order for us to effectively share the gospel, we need to be mindful of where other people are coming from and what they believe.
It would be unfair of us to approach someone and tell them all about what we believe without first understanding their religion. If we can understand where they are coming from, what they believe and why, then we can better approach them.
I Barely Knew Anything About Other Religions
In taking this class, I learned a great deal. I’m an International Psychology major and was ashamed that I barely knew anything about other religions. I was ashamed that I wanted to be able to do counseling, missions, travel and work cross-culturally, and yet knew nothing about where other people were coming from in their own faith.
My favorite part was not only learning about different religions, but learning ways to approach the people from different religions. We also went over how to best contextualize the Christian message.
I Feel More Grounded in My Own Faith
This class will definitely help me in my future career. I feel more grounded in my own faith and I have a firmer grasp on why I am a Christian. Now, I can have more intelligent conversations with people from different religions, and I can also explain what I believe and why.
