Apologetics for Children

How can we help our children understand evidence for the Christian faith?

When people ask me about apologetics for children, I think back to the time when my son was in kindergarten. A classmate would tease him at school by sarcastically asking, “Do you still believe in that God thing?”

This confirmed my suspicion that it’s never too early to begin talking to your kids about what we believe and some of the basic evidence for Christian truth claims. Even children who don’t encounter skeptical friends at school can ask big questions about some of the most important things in life.

How prepared are we to explain key elements of the Christian worldview to kids in a way they can understand? It is so important for us to be able to contextualize apologetics for children. In this episode of the Table Podcast, I shared a Skype conversation with my friend Melissa Travis of Houston Baptist University (HBU) to talk about this very question.

We discussed how to use stories to explain the Christian worldview to children, focusing on her Young Defenders series of children’s books. These books would make great gifts for your kids, grandkids, or other young children in your life.

Links to her children’s books are at the bottom of this post.

Apologetics for Children: The Young Defender’s Series

by Melissa Travis

How Do We Know God Is Really There?

Thomas and his father escape to their backyard tree house to watch the night sky through a telescope. Thomas is dazzled by God’s creation, but he has questions. “Dad, how do we know God is out there?” he asks one night. Together, Thomas and his father examine the evidence for God’s existence. This is the first in a series of picture books designed to explore important questions of the Christian faith in a way even pre-readers can understand!

How Do We Know God Created Life?

Thomas has been looking forward to this field trip for weeks! His mom is guiding a group tour of the new insect exhibit at the Museum of Natural Science. Thomas and his friend Sophie are awestruck by the displays, but they have questions when one exhibit claims that butterflies evolved the special ability to transform from caterpillars without a pre-determined design. Together, Sophie, Thomas, and his mom (Mrs. Paley) examine the evidence to learn how the butterfly’s life cycle indicates a Creator God.

How Do We Know Right from Wrong?

Thomas has made a poor choice. He knows he sinned, and he can’t sleep for the guilt he’s feeling. So he sits down with Grandpa for a late-night heart-to-heart talk, and together they tackle some tough questions: Who decides what is right and what is wrong? How do we know the difference? And when faced with a choice between the two, how can we always choose to do what is right? Thomas can’t sleep for the guilt he’s feeling. So he sits down with Grandpa for a late-night, heart-to-heart talk, and together they tackle some tough questions: Who decides what is right and what is wrong? How do we know the difference? And when given a choice between the two, how can we always choose to do what is right?

How Do We Know Jesus Is Alive?

It’s not all fun and games at summer camp as Thomas and his friends wrestle with some important questions: What happens to our bodies when we die? How can we be sure that Jesus came back from the dead? And can we believe what His disciples said about Jesus being alive? Explore the evidence together with your young ones in a fun way!
